Questions on Ayurveda and its Approach

What is "Ayurvedic medicine"?

Ayurveda is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a “complementary traditional medicine.” The WHO actually encourages the integration of these approaches into national health systems. According to its definition, Ayurveda is a millennia-old traditional care system, born in South Asia. The term means “knowledge of life.” This discipline takes into account all dimensions of existence: physical, psychological, spiritual and social. It aims for harmony, health and longevity.

In practice, Ayurveda considers the body and mind as a whole. It seeks to understand and address the root causes of a global imbalance, rather than limiting itself to symptoms. For this, it relies on phytotherapy, nutrition, lifestyle, body therapies and other traditional methods.

This approach takes into account not only the person’s physical state, but also their feelings, habits and living environment. These elements can be the source of the problem as well as its solution.

Ayurveda does not fall under “conventional” medicine, is not officially recognized in France and in no way replaces the advice or prescriptions of your physician.

For more information, consult our article Ayurveda, in brief, or visit the site Ayurveda in France.

Can Ayurveda replace my current medical treatment?

No. Ayurveda (sometimes called Ayurvedic medicine) does not replace medical treatment. It can only act as a complement, supporting your overall balance. Your medical treatment must always be followed as prescribed by your doctor.

Does Ayurveda have side effects?

We limit ourselves to gentle to moderate traditional tools, thus avoiding serious adverse effects typically associated with invasive therapies or synthetic medications.

However, even the gentlest care can cause unwanted effects if poorly adapted to your situation. For example, advising someone to eat licorice for its anti-inflammatory properties would be counterproductive if that person suffered from hypertension, as licorice can raise blood pressure. Similarly, recommending an energetic massage to someone in a period of intense stress could significantly worsen their condition.

The limits of “natural” remedies. Because Ayurvedic remedies are minimally processed and non-synthetic, they are often perceived as safer than pharmaceutical substances. This perception, while understandable, is not always accurate. Contrary to popular belief, traditional medicine products are not automatically risk-free and can lead to negative consequences, particularly when they interact with other medications or are used in high doses.

Our safety commitment. This is why your practitioner scrupulously respects the principle of “do no harm” and takes the time to assess in detail your constitution, your medical history, your current treatments and your particular sensitivities. Each tool is adapted according to your current state, the season and the climate to guarantee both effectiveness and comfort. She will only direct you towards food supplements and herbs whose use is authorised in France, and will encourage you to always follow the instructions of your physician.

I already have a good lifestyle: what can Ayurveda offer me?

Ayurveda allows you to adjust your diet and lifestyle to your unique constitution, rather than following standardised approaches. For example, Ayurveda doesn’t just look at what you eat, but also how, when and why. Even a “perfect diet” can be sub-optimal if it doesn’t match your type of metabolism, the strength of your digestion, the season, or your lifestyle.

In Ayurveda, you are provided with a health program and individualised tools, taking into account your basic metabolic tendency and your personal history, that allow you to support your emotional and physical balance in the long term, whether you have health concerns or not.

What if I don't have a medical diagnosis?

Ayurveda (often referred to as Ayurvedic medicine) does not need a medical diagnosis. It does not treat medical diseases, but rather supports the body and mind as a whole to promote rebalancing of physiological functions. Even without a medical diagnosis, Ayurveda can accompany you, but it does not replace your medical treatment.

I have an incurable disease, can Ayurveda help me?

Ayurveda (known as Ayurvedic medicine) does not cure an incurable disease. However, it can strengthen your physical and emotional resources. When health is weakened, the body and mind lose balance: Ayurveda offers tools (nutrition, lifestyle, phytotherapy, body care) to help you regain well-being, even when facing a chronic or incurable disease.

Why do I need to go through an initial consultation in Ayurveda or other complementary traditional medicine before being able to benefit from follow-up or certain body therapies?

Complementary traditional approaches like Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani-Tibb, traditional Greek medicine, and traditional Chinese medicine, are based on a biocharacteristic theory of health: they qualitatively assess the person’s physiological state and the external influences that affect them. An initial consultation allows establishing an individualized profile of the person’s constitution, and identifying habits and external influences that affect their current state of health. This initial assessment is essential to guide any therapy or follow-up, which otherwise could not be coherent or effective.

Are Ayurvedic consultations or therapies reimbursed?

It depends on your country of origin and your health coverage. You will find below a non-exhaustive list of mutual insurance companies that could offer reimbursements in France. These mutual insurance companies may reimburse “Ayurveda,” or may consider Ayurveda as naturopathy (Ayurvedic naturopathy).

In France: ASETYS, SwissLife, Miltis, Apicil, Apivia, Smatis.
